Five Significant Satellite Developments

October 16, 2017

As you may know, over half the globe (54%) has no, or bad, internet access. This is particularly true in developing countries.  At this year’s Satellite Innovation Symposium in the Silicon Valley, multiple speakers detailed their constellation satellite launch plans to bring low-latency connectivity to the rest of the world.

It is an exciting time in history to be part of the digital content delivery industry. Here are a few of the biggest developments.

  1. The space industry is expected have a $304 billion market because of the 3,000 satellites expected to launch between 2017 and 2026.
  2. More than three quarters of the future space market will remain with Governments. Part of the Governments’ space market includes $239 billion for 1,000 satellites to be launched for civilian and military agencies.
  3. 85% of the government sector will remain within countries with existing space industries–the U.S., Russia, China, Japan, India, and the top five European countries. However, fifty other countries will launch 200 satellites, representing twice the number of satellites they have launched in the previous 10 years.
  4. Within the Commercial Sector, 2,000 satellites are expected to launch over the next decade.  Greg Wyler’s OneWeb will launch about half.  At the Satellite Innovation Symposium, Greg showed the first images of the satellite components that will be used on OneWeb’s 648 LEO satellites, the first series of which is set to launch in 2019.  Currently, most communication satellites have a 600 millisecond delay time, OneWeb low earth orbit satellites are expected to reduce this time down 30 milliseconds, 95% faster.  Low latency is particularly important when it comes to mission critical content.
  5. 300 satellites will be launched on average every year by 2026 by government agencies and commercial organizations. This is three times the number of satellites that were released over the past decade.

As a leader in this industry who serves multiple critical and prestigious global satellite networks, KenCast is thrilled to be part of this future and our Fazzt® Digital Delivery software is well positioned for making future satellite networks more secure and reliable.
